“Hanukkah and a Rediscovery of Jewish Customs”

Krista Tippet on Being explores Hanukkah and other Jewish Customs with Scott-Martin Kosofsky, a book designer and editor.  Hanukkah is being celebrated right now, December 3-December 9.  Happy Haukkah!  This link has a ton of resources, slide shows, podcast, playlist and recommended readings!  Enjoy

“Kul’am wa enta bi-khair!”

May every year find you in good health!  Sundown on Tuesday August 10 marked the beginning of Ramadan.

Thanks to Jason Moore, Assistant Director of Edmundite Campus Ministry at Saint Michael’s College for sending out the following e-mail to faculty, staff, and students about Ramadan. He has resources for learning more about Ramadan, phrases of well wishes to those who are celebrating (like the title of this entry), and a brief summary of the holiday.  Enjoy!

Sundown last night marked the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan for our 1.6 billion Muslim brothers and sisters throughout the world.  The Islamic calendar is a lunar one and months begin when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted.

During this month (Ramadan al Mubarak), the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, participating Muslims seek to deepen their relationship with Allah through fasting, prayer, sacrifice, and works of charity and generosity.

Throughout the month, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, sexual conduct, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess from dawn until sunset. Ramadan is meant to teach Muslims patience, spirituality, empathy, generosity, self-control, and self-discipline, thereby drawing believers closer to Allah. Eid ul-Fitr (The Festivity to Break the Fast) marks the end of Ramadan and will fall on September 10th this year.

If you wish to learn more about Ramadan, I would recommend listening to Krista Tippett’s Speaking of Faith program entitled “Revealing Ramadan.” I’ve provided the link here: http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/programs/2009/ramadan/

We in Edmundite Campus Ministry wish our Muslim brothers and sisters at Saint Michael’s College (and throughout the world) a holy and blessed Ramadan.  Please be assured of our prayers.  If we can be of any assistance to you during this month, please let us know.
